BREATHWORK MAY BE ANCIENT, BUT SCIENCE NOW PROVES ITS POWER.
By changing how you breathe, you can shift your body from stress mode (“fight or flight”) into calm mode (“rest and digest”). This lowers cortisol, reduces blood pressure, and creates a deep sense of ease.
Controlled breathing also boosts oxygen to the brain, sharpens focus, and triggers endorphins (the “feel-good chemicals”) that lift mood and ease anxiety. Simple techniques like diaphragmatic breathing can improve lung function, energy, and resilience.
Research shows practices such as pranayama even help with anxiety, depression, and PTSD, while enhancing mindfulness and emotional balance.
In short: breathwork is a fast, natural way to recharge your body and reset your mind.
A comprehensive study conducted by researchers at the University of Cambridge has shed light on the impact of SOMA Breath® on brainwave activity and mental health/wellness.
This study demonstrated that SOMA Breath® positively influences brainwave activity in ways comparable to advanced therapeutic interventions. Participants also reported measurable improvements in emotional wellbeing, including reduced stress and enhanced calmness.
“Controlled breathing reduces cortisol and activates the
parasympathetic system, which frees up mental resources
for exploration and ideation.”
Jennifer Furter is a South African-born consultant, facilitator, and certified SOMA Breathwork Coach dedicated to helping people reclaim balance in an increasingly unbalanced world.
Her career began in London, where she spent three formative years at Citibank refining her understanding of client needs and human behaviour. After returning to Cape Town, she spent the next 15 years navigating the pressures of full-time corporate life while raising a family, working across fintech environments in risk, customer relations, leadership development, and project management.
Along the way, Jennifer realised that the fast pace and constant demands of modern work had created a silent crisis: people were achieving professionally, yet losing access to peace, clarity, and presence.
Driven to change this, she founded Breathing Room, a space designed to help professionals, leaders, and caregivers pause, reset, and breathe. Through a blend of practical workplace insight and globally accredited SOMA Breathwork Coaching, Jennifer guides clients toward greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, and sustainable work-life harmony.
Her approach is rooted in empathy, lived experience, and a belief that everyone deserves space to breathe, think, and thrive.
